We installed this ventilation unit about 5 years ago. Does a great job of removing cooking odors. We've never had a problem with it moving up & down. If we ever move to a new house, I'll insist we get another one.

Cool idea, poorly designed

I've had this unit for almost 4 years now. I was really excited that it would telescope out of the island when needed and not be a eye sore when it wasn't needed. Not long after I had it, the guides on the side would start to stick and/or not keep the vent centered when moving up and down. When the unit gets off center, there are screws the protrude along the side of the vent that will get caught on the housing and cause the unit to jam. So now when I move the unit up, I have to watch it and keep pushing it back to center constantly to keep if from jamming. This is something that my wife can't do because it takes some strength and size to reach all the way across the stovetop and keep an eye on the position of the slide. This is because they used some cheap guide design that is just some spring loaded plastic pins that just ride in a sheetmetal track. Now after about 4 years of use, the screw drive that raises and lowers it has broke. I took off the vent cover to see the issue, and they used a plastic retaining ring around the screw drive and it has shattered into about 10 pieces. This allows the screw to come uncoupled from the motor. So this thing has been a very disappointing use of $1,000.
