Great picture and sound

I bought this about 2 months ago to replace an older Sony Blu-ray player. The picture and sound are awesome. The only problem I have had is the picture and sound would go blank during streaming Netflix and playing a DVD. Tech support was very helpful and said I needed to do a system reset. They stayed with me on the phone, giving instructions, until I completed the reset. They gave me a ticket number to refer to if it did not cure the problem and I needed to call back. The problem has not returned for the last 30 days. All is working very well.

So Samsung does not tell you this in advance before buying their products. They can decide to "retire" apps from their TVs and BluRays.
My wife and I bought the product thinking we would have HULU as well as other video apps. While in the middle of a show ON HULU, Samsung decides to retire the HULU app from the BluRay AND the TV Hulu App too.
Disgusting honestly. They dont care about your experience with the product people, so dont buy into it. They can do this anytime they feel like it. Look up other reviews and videos if you dont believe me. Hope this helps.

Do not buy this item. The tray would not open out of the box. No quality control to make sure it works before packing it and selling it. Tried contacting samsung, who I bought it from and only option is warranty repair.

Works then does not work...power light turns to blinking green or blinking green then red. First screen comes on for 10 seconds, then automatically goes to disk screen, or if you press any button before 10 seconds, goes to same disk screen. Then no button on remote works. All is frozen.

this blu ray player has glitches. ever since i bought it, i experience random flashes every time i attempt to view any disc 4k or otherwise. 4k players are expensive and should at least be able to perform its primary function (playing movies) without issue

Replaced a 6300 that died at 22 months; not quite the solution I had expected.
I will say that the picture is awesome, and the audio is a noticeable improvement over the one being replaced.
However, the older Blu-ray player had some features that are, disappointingly, missing from this newer, more expensive model. Across the board, Samsung seems to have eliminated several positive characteristics - and selection variety - from its line-up. (The brand is still better than its competitors.)
These are some of the conveniences missing from the 8500 that were built-in to the 6300:
Does not turn the television on/off automatically, takes about three extra steps;
When turned on, goes directly to disc function, requiring several steps to get to apps;
With no front panel display, not always sure if it's on or off;
Older programming on Hulu, originally in 4:3 ratio, is stretched to 16:9 - looks awful.
There are several other minor issues, which I won't go into here.
I had expected that an upgrade costing 2.5X as much as my old unit would incorporate at least the same convenience features. It's a shame that the 8500 does not.

Samsung UBD-85C-ZA 4k BR player (tips for solid 5-star performance)
WhiskeyTangoActual
4/23/2018
The Samsung UBD-85C-ZA is Costco's variant of the UBD-8500 HDR10 WCG BR disc. The only slight difference between the two are the (equally disappointing) IR remote controls, with the UBD-85C's remote being slightly less annoying.
They both have Samsung's SmartHub and are fully backward compatible with DVDs, 1080p BluRays, HDTVs.
This model is a perfect companion for Samsung's MU8000 series 4k HDR10+ WCG smartTVs. Both support Dolby Digital Plus bitstream output with Dolby ATMOS extensions over 18Gb/s, HDCP2.2, HDMI2.0a cable connections. The UBD-85C also supports Dolby TrueHD bitstream output with Dolby ATMOS extensions over the same cable connections.
Forget about analog audio out, optical audio out and/or Bluetooth connectivity, if you want to fully/maximally leverage all of the high end video and audio features of the UBD-85C. Using any of those connection options will sacrifice features and functionality - all due to bandwidth limitations. They are kludges for connectivity to lesser devices. That is the cold hard truth, if you expect the UBD-85C to really shine.
Inadequate HDMI cabling and/or using non-HDCP2.2/HDMI2.0a are likely at the root of some bad reviews of the UBD-8500. There is also an obscure MU8000 smartTV Expert Picture setting, for "HDR+ Mode," that must be enabled for HDR10+/WCG to work properly with any capable 4k BR HDR/WCG player and discs.
For multimedia networking, I always hardwire Cat6e, RJ-45 Ethernet connections using 1Gig Ethernet routers/switches, subnetted apart from all other traffic. No point in monkeying around with interference vulnerable WiFi (with the sole WiFi exception being for satellite surround speakers).
The setup is as bulletproof as I can make it; maximizing video image and audio performance.
Using over-the-wire firmware update 1014.0, the UBD-85C has properly played every commercially pressed music CD, DVD, standard BR and 4kBR disc I've tried. Dozens of 4kBRs and hundreds of the rest. (Latest firmware a/o this writing is 1015.0.) I performed a three month burn-in test on my setup.
All tested 4kBRs are true 4k-from-4k Digital Intermediate Master, commercially pressed titles. No "fake" 4kBRs derived from blown-up *2k* DI Master.
Everything visually pops and dazzels as much as my 120Hz, ~500nits, VA LED panel will allow, running over all 18Gb/s, HDCP2.2, HDMI2.0a connections. Even lowly DVDs are upscaled nicely to full screen.
I'm also getting 7.1.2 Dolby ATMOS object sound from Dolby ATMOS BR disc soundtracks (via Dolby TrueHD bitstream extensions in the KBD-85C) and Dolby ATMOS streams from YouTube and vudu (via Dolby Digital Plus bitstream extensions on the MU8000) using HDMI connected Dolby ATMOS hardware.
Quite amazing from 2017 consumer tech.
There are bugs and glitches...
Some BR/4kBR disc plays may blackout for upto several seconds before the picture resumes. When this happens, image resumes at the same displacement in playtime as the blackout. Immediately backtracking and replaying the same area of the disc never replicates these blackouts. It's a player glitch, not bad discs. Happens once per 50 or so full video disc plays and never more than once per full play. Not very frequently, but often enough to notice (on firmware 1014) and be annoyed.
The backtrack/skiptrack remote buttons also serve double duty for slow reverse/forward play, trickily based on button tap vs button press-and-hold. It's a propeller-headed compromise. This makes single frame back/forward stepping super tricky to execute - something I do when studying how content was made.
Pressing different remote buttons in too rapid succession can hang the player, necessitating cold-boot to recover.
Inserted discs are not all automatically recognized upon insertion. A few require manually selecting the "no disc" frame on the home page.
Idiotically, no front panel player mode/status display on the actual unit. Only OSD info via the Tools button (or, even more disruptive, the Play/Pause button) on the remote.
Given my setup and what I use it for, the UBD-85C-ZA is a solid 5 star performer with a very high ratio of performance-to-price.

GREAT DVD PLAY WITH ONE EXCEPTION

The DVD player smart hub it self is a great product and easy to use. The only thing I didn't like about it was the remote that came with it. . But the remote from and old one I had works great. Had a little trouble getting the APPS I wanted until I realized the APPS selector was at the far left of the APPS bar.
There was not Manual that came with it and I couldn't find one on the internet.
But over all once set up and programmed its easy to use and it give a clearer picture on the TV screen.
On feature I like is Close Caption. To get close caption hit the down button on the remote hit the right arrow button over CC click select font size, got to upper left hand and turn on close caption.

1. You need to provide a users' manual, and the remote needs labels so that I know what each icon is supposed to do.
Consumer Reports rated this DVD very highly, but having trouble using it.

I have or have had prior to this 4K unit 5 Samsung Blu-ray players. This new unit gives an outstanding picture and has great APPs. It also has great upscaling to give great pictures with regular Blu-ray and DVD discs. What I perceive as drawbacks are:
1. Learning to use the remote takes some getting used to and it would be easier to use if the keys were highlighted better.
2. There is no time clock on the front so that you can see how far along you are into a show without hitting the pause button to see it on the screen.

Blu-Ray and 4K movies are a problem
QuadGate
1/22/2018
Blu-ray players have a problem with Blu-ray and 4K movie disk, now DVD disk work fine in most players no matter what brand. I have a number of Samsung Blu-ray players. Starting with a Samsung, BD-D5700/ZA manufacture 2011.11. Now this unit will not play Blu-ray disk, I have tried everything, it's updated on firmware. Back then I was not buying Blu-Ray disk unless they came in a combo package,(Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital). Second one Samsung BD-EM57C/ZA, manufacture 2012.11, this one also will not play Blu-ray disk, it also has the latest firmware. I still had only a few Blu-ray disk. I got a 2017 Series 8 Samsung TV, which is GREAT, works wonderfully, amazing picture with the 240Hz. So I decided the get a new Samsung Blu-ray player, a Samsung UBD-M8500/ZA, manufacture in 2017. The first one has worked fine since late12/2017. I bought a 2nd in 01/2018, UBD-M8500/ZA, will not play Blu-Ray Disk, out for repair, It's under Warranty. I have lots of Blu-Ray and 4K disk now, so I want a player that works.

Completely satisfied with this HDR 4K player. I got this with my Q7F and have used it several times with no problems, amazing 4K picture quality and Hdr. not quite sure why the other reviewers have had the issues that they have, they may want to take their unit back and exchange it for another one. Streaming Ultra high-def through Vudu and even watching HDR 4K content on Netflix has not been a problem either on the television itself or on the Blu-ray player I opted for this one over the 9500 because I didn't seem to need the extra features, great overall value very pleased with my purchase

Huge disappointment

I recently purchased this player to go with my new 2017 Samsung MU7000 and it's not everything they claim. I played several 4K movies and the images were not that great. The images were to dark. I tried to adjust the settings which didn't work either. Like from dynamic to standard movie and they don't even work. It also claims it's HDR but it doesn't have the HDR quality they advertised. Also it's streaming in 4K is very limited. If you want to stream UHD on VUDU through the player, forget it. It can't stream UHD. The TV streams better then the player. Honestly I thought it was supposed to be as good as the UBD-M9500 except without the Bluetooth, 360 content, the 2nd HDMI, and the disc to mobile. All in all this player is a huge let down. You can try and adjust the settings but they won't change a thing. Also I tried getting help from Samsung but they never replied.
